President's message by Ir C.K. NG
It is my great honour to be elected as the President of HKIUS, 2017-19.
First of all, I must express thanks Previous Presidents who have set up standards and published various guidelines for the utility industry.
Ethical practices and professionalism are the cornerstones of our profession’s status in the society, I shall, together with the new Council of HKIUS, with support from all members, continue to build our profession into a brand of professionalism, high ethics and high standards and add value to its significance in the engineering industry of Hong Kong. In doing so, international conference such as ICUMAS and regular seminars will be organized by HKIUS with supports from other professional bodies and government authorities to help improve utility safety and maintain a sustainable development of utilities.
The evolution of digital and mobile technology in daily life and social activities has led to an irreversible trend that the modernization of information and communication process has become the driving force of digital revolution. This new wave of digital revolution is extending to sectors and industries in various commercial and technical applications. There is no exception for construction industry. Digital and mobile technologies are transforming the way construction is planned, designed, procured and operated. The Government of Hong Kong has announced in the Policy Address that Building Information Modelling (BIM) will be used for all major projects with design starting in 2018. Sooner or later, utility specialists will be required to submit BIM models as deliverables for utility detection works. This will enable clients to immediately reuse the data for their design or construction. With the representation of building and infrastructure in BIM or 3D formats, related technologies such as GIS, AR, robot, mobile device can be integrated to help advancement of the construction industry.
There are five major objectives I would like to lay down in the next two years to come.
1. Organize ICUMAS to be held in Malaysia.
2. Promote safety in the utility industry
3. Publish BIM Agreement
4. Issue BIM standards for underground utilities
5. Encourage members to adopt BIM or 3D CAD for the storage and presentation of UU detection.
Looking forward to working with you.
